Yoshirolla Kilomantra - What IS this thing? (& why I should be involved)
YOSHIROLLA KILOMANTRA is a relatively new term, recently added to the Urban Dictionary.
Yoshirolla Kilomantra - Un-official Definitions
While
the literal Definition of yoshirolla kilomantra is: 'large cooked Japanese
dinosaur chant', the phrase actually refers to the practice of Spit-braaiing
Karoo-lamb in beer outdoors at night, and serving on Japanese style mats with
lashings of minted soy sauce. Initially started as a fun extracurricular activity by Paleontology students at UofSL in the late '90's, Yoshirolla Kilomantra is an activity that has gained hugely in popularity developing something of a cult following in parts of Southern Africa.-
Apparently the farm above sells what you need if you want the real deal....Might be a tad chewy...
Yoshirolla Kilomantra - Summary History of Origins
Three senior year students at the UofSL (Willie Maekitt, Shirley Knot and Betty Khan) are avid outdoor enthusiast. In 1999, while on a dig, they were discussing the Gameboy game Yoshi's Island which involves a little dinosaur designed by Shigeru Miyamoto.
That evening, the dig
master (no names menitoned m'am), surprised the students with a lamb spit-braai.
As the students had not been expecting to stay in the field over night, there
were no chairs or tables for serving or eating. As a result, the team was
forced to eat off the dig mats. Just before eating, having imbibed a few illicit
beers, the 3 senior students began to dance around the spit-braai chanting
'Yoshi. Yoshi. Yoshi'. This was the start of the first recorded official
yoshirolla kilomantra, though they were not to know it at the time. A Fellow Japanese Student, Hansawm Wang, added 'Rolla' to make the first word of the phrase we know today - 'Yoshirolla'. Rolla from Rulla (as in 'he that rulla' warped slightly).
Willie then chimed in with a comment about the fact that Yoshirolla , being a dinosaur that rules, should be big, Shirley went and took this a step further and added a further word to the chant - 'Kilo'.
Yoshirolla Kilo seemed to be just about finalized as a new addition to the UofSL's vocabulary, until Betty Khan mentioned that they should ensure to remember the origins of the practice - a ridiculous chant around an open spitbraai - and added the word ' mantra' to the end of Kilo. The final version Yoshirolla Kilomantra has become a legend in its own right at the University, and over the last 8 years has spread quickly, not only in Southern Africa, but globally.
First, the practice of Yoshirolla Kilomantra spread to other UofSL faculties
and departments, and from there to other universities and colleges in Southern
Africa. A Yoshirolla Kilomantra has become an integral part of the festivities
at the unofficial after-party of the Gunston
500 surfing competition. However, in 2005, the practice of yoshirolla kilomantra went global when it was picked up on at an unofficial offshoot of the Western Inter-University Geoscience Conference in Vancouver, BC Canada in 2004.
How to Yoshirolla Kilomantra - a guide for newbies
Barbequeing or braaing on a spit outdoors is mandatory. What you cook is not; pig, lamb, ox - it's your call. Regularly splashing beer on the carcass as it turns on the spit is mandatory Inviting friends and spreading the Word (and the unofficial yoshirolla kilomantra mantra) is mandatory Eating on floor mats is not required, though it is recommended Chanting "YOSHIROLLA KILOMANTRA! thingey.) Bringing Yoshi's Island game - not allowed (kinda defeats the purpose of being outside no?). Bringing stuffed Yoshi
