Hemorrhoids
Treatment
When you have hemorrhoids,
you will immediately try to find out how to
treat hemorrhoids and often the initial treatment
of hemorrhoids is aimed at relieving the symptoms
of pain and discomfort. Many of these ways to
treat hemorrhoids can be done in the comfort
of your own home. You can also treat the causes
of the hemorrhoids at home too as these are
usually because of your diet or your lifestyle.
How to treat
a hemorrhoid
Diet is the key to both
preventing hemorrhoids in the first place and
then healing hemroids
in the second place. You need to change to a
high bulk diet with plenty of fresh fruit and
vegetables plus a fiber supplement if necessary
to prevent constipation. You also need to drink
plenty of water.
To treat hemorrhoids,
avoid sitting on the toilet for long periods
of time and avoid straining when having a bowel
movement. Don’t put off going to the toilet
when you feel the need and try to get into the
habit of having a bowel movement at the same
time each day. Also avoid holding your breath
when having a bowel movement. Take stool softeners
if necessary to prevent the need for straining
or use a bulk forming laxative to prevent constipation
while your new high bulk diet is starting to
work.
Avoid prolonged sitting
or standing and avoid lifting heavy objects.
Sitting on an inflatable cushion can help to
minimize any pressure on the anal area. Make
sure you exercise regularly as this will also
help with any constipation too.
You can take a warm bath
several times a day or even just sit in a bowl
of warm water as this will give you relief from
the pain and discomfort as well as help treat
hemorrhoids. Afterwards, pat the anal area dry
gently with no rubbing or scrubbing. A mild
pain reliever can also be taken.
Then as part of your
healing process and to help treat hemorrhoids,
use one of the natural hemorrhoids treatments
made with essential oils which will give you
immediate relief while healing the hemorrhoids.
There is even a pregnancy version of the treatment
which can be used safely and successfully by
pregnant and nursing mothers.
Sometimes hemorrhoids
might be too severe with persistent pain and
bleeding and in such a case, you will need to
see a doctor on how to treat a hemorrhoid. When
surgical intervention is warranted, the doctor
will decide between the different options to
treat hemorrhoids after discussing them with
you:
Surgical hemorrhoidectomy
where the hemorrhoid is removed in the operating
room.
Banding of the
hemorrhoid where by using scopes in the anus,
the medical practitioner gets hold of the hemorrhoid
and puts a rubber hand in the base of it. The
rubber band strangulates the hemorrhoid and
both fall off five days later.
Infrared coagulation
where a machine is used that produces an infrared
wavelength to treat the hemorrhoid. This is
almost like branding the hemorrhoid back into
place so that it cannot fall out again. An alternative
is to use the same machine to destroy the artery
coming into to the hemorrhoid so that it shrinks
because it does not have a blood supply any
longer.
A new procedure
gaining popularity is stapled hemorrhoidectomy.
When severe hemorrhoids are bulging down out
of the anal area, the medical practitioner uses
a stapling device to get above the hemorrhoid
and bunch up the mucosa (the lining of the rectum)
which is then pulled up with the hemorrhoid
back inside. This is a very painless procedure.
It is important
not to let hemorrhoids reach the stage where
the only hemorrhoid treatment is surgery because
after removal surgery, most patients have a
week of painful bowel movements and then another
week of improving pain before the healing process
is complete. And with such procedures, there
is always a slight risk that either the anal
sphincter muscles or the rectal wall muscles
could be damaged. This could mean the patient
spending the rest of his life not being able
to hold on to his bowel movements. However,
the emphasis should be on a slight risk.
