Hemorrhoid Treatment

The spelling of the condition of hemorrhoids often causes confusion. In the US, the spelling is hemorrhoids while in Britain the spelling is Haemorrhoids. However, an alternative spelling is Hemroids and the condition itself is often known as Piles. Although hemroids is often confused with anal fissures, the two conditions are completely different.

But whatever the spelling, the suffering from the condition remains the same. Hemorrhoids are abnormally swollen veins in the rectum and the anus. They are rather like the varicose veins you might see on a person’s legs and when these bulging veins are irritated, they cause the surrounding membranes to swell up. They might burn or itch or become very painful and even bleed. So basically, hemorrhoids are caused by too much pressure in the rectum. The walls of the veins are stretched by the amount of blood they contain and these walls sometimes rupture.

Hemorrhoids or hemroids are extremely common and 50% of the population will suffer from them at some time during their lives. Hemorrhoids often occur both during and after pregnancy. During pregnancy and as the uterus grows, the pressure can increase on those veins situated lower in the body. In addition, the pregnancy hormone progesterone relaxes the walls of the veins which in turn allow them to swell.

Hemorrhoids treatment

Part of the hemorrhoids treatment is what you can do yourself to prevent hemorrhoids in the first place or to reduce the pain and discomfort of them:

  • Avoid sitting or standing for long periods.

  • If you have to lift heavy weights, always breathe out as you strain or lift and do not hold your breath.

  • If you are suffering from coughing, diarrhea or constipation, then treat these conditions promptly.

  • Drink lots of water and include plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables in your diet to keep your bowel movements regular. Include fiber too.

  • Start a program of regular exercise.

  • Avoid pain relief medications which contain codeine, as these can cause constipation.

  • If you do have hemorrhoids or hemroids, then sit and soak the affected area in a warm bath or bowl several times a day to relieve the pain and discomfort.

  • Clean the anus after each bowel movement by patting gently with moist toilet paper or use gentle baby wipes.

  • Use ice packs to relieve swelling.

  • Hemorrhoid treatment options

    These include:

  • Rubber band ligation which is a form of hemorrhoids treatment where a small rubber band is placed around the base of the hemorrhoid. The flow of blood is restricted and the hemorrhoid shrinks away.

  • Surgical removal which is sometimes used where internal hemorrhoids are prolapsed or very large.

  • Laser coagulation which is where an electrical current is applied to the hemorrhoid. A chemical reaction prevents the blood flow to the hemorrhoid and it withers away.

  • Infrared photocoagulation which is where an infrared light is used to coagulate the vein so that the blood supply is cuff off from the hemorrhoid.

  • Sclerothapy which is where chemicals are injected into the mucous membrane of the area around the hemorrhoid. This causes the vein to close and the hemorrhoid to shrink.

  • Laser treatment which is used to vaporize various types of hemorrhoids. Although a costly method, this is very precise and there is very little bleeding. Healing is more rapid and recovery less painful.

  • Natural healing products which in recent years have become very popular as a successful hemorrhoids treatment. There is even a product to use for bleeding hemorrhoids as this is a secondary condition which needs to be treated before the primary hemorrhoids treatment is commenced. The products are also safe for pregnant and nursing mothers and are produced from pure essential oils.

  • Even after a successful hemorrhoid treatment, it is wise to keep up the suggested diet, exercise and other self help treatments in order to avoid the recurrence of hemroids in the future. Once you have had hemroids, there is a greater possibility that they will occur again.
